Chevrolet Traverse vs. Ford Explorer: Compare Midsize Three-Row SUVs in Hinesville, GA
The Chevrolet Traverse is an exemplary three-row crossover with comfortable accommodations and expansive versatility. It offers one of the segment's roomiest interiors, including ample passenger space and a vast cargo area. Even adults can ride comfortably in the back seats. A recent third-generation redesign has made the Traverse even more compelling, with upgraded performance, more standard features, a bold new look, and an adventure-ready Z71 trim level. Here's a quick look at how the Chevy Traverse compares to a prominent class competitor, the Ford Explorer.

Performance and Capability
The third-generation Chevy Traverse is propelled by a new high-output 2.5-liter turbo-four engine that makes 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque, delivering improved efficiency and better performance (+18 horsepower, +60 pound-feet of torque) over its V6 predecessor. The Ford Explorer's 2.3-liter turbo-four comes close (300 horsepower/311 pound-feet of torque) but doesn't quite match the Traverse's standard performance.
For Pooler outdoor enthusiasts who like to venture beyond the asphalt, the third-gen Traverse offers Chevy's popular Z71 trim level. Available for the first time in the model's lineup, the Z71 trim gives the Traverse real off-road capability thanks to a special twin-clutch all-wheel-drive system and features like all-terrain tires, heavy-duty cooling, off-road suspension tuning, skid plates, recovery hooks, and extra drive modes. With the discontinuation of its Timberline trim after a recent update, the Ford Explorer can no longer keep up with the Traverse on the trails.
Accommodations and Versatility
The Chevy Traverse is among the roomiest SUVs in its class. Compared to the Ford Explorer, the Traverse offers more than an inch of extra front legroom and an additional two inches of second-row legroom. Taller drivers will especially appreciate the nearly two more inches of headroom. Plus, while many midsize crossovers have relatively cramped back seats, the Traverse has enough room for adults to ride comfortably in all three rows.
Cargo-carrying practicality is a primary advantage of choosing an SUV, and the Chevy Traverse offers it in abundance. With all seats upright the Traverse reserves 22.9 cubic feet for your groceries or gear, compared to just 16.3 in the Explorer. When your Jesup errands and outings require even more capacity, you can fold the rear seats to reveal 56.6 cubic feet behind the second row and a cavernous 97.6 cubic feet behind the first (compared to 46 and 85.8 in the Explorer).

Standard Features
With both models receiving significant recent updates, the Chevy Traverse and Ford Explorer offer greatly expanded base trim levels. Each comes standard with features like heated front seats, three-zone automatic climate control, adaptive cruise control, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration. They also include advanced safety technologies like forward collision mitigation, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assistance. However, the Chevy Traverse LS offers a few notable advantages over the Ford Explorer Active, including:
- The Traverse comes standard with a hands-free liftgate. The Explorer includes a regular power-opening liftgate but doesn't offer hands-free operation in any configuration.
- The Traverse's new 17.7-inch touchscreen is the largest infotainment display in the segment, providing easier viewing and menu navigation than the Explorer's 13.2-inch screen.
- The third-gen Traverse now comes standard with HD Surround Vision, providing easier maneuverability in tight spaces. The Ford Explorer offers a 360-degree camera system, but it's reserved for higher trim levels.
